Peter Downsbrough: Street Signs

Softcover | 16 x 24 cm | 72pp

Coracle | 2019 | 9780906630594

28 photographs of manhole coverings and grilles randomly encountered on drifts through the urban landscape.

With his characteristic interest in words and lines, Downsbrough applies his own playful minimal artistic grammar, system and precision in another work of his usual spareness and restraint.

With the word, one takes part in a dialogue, a discourse on its precise meaning […] The word for me is an object. It has both a precise and a vague meaning. It is a universe one is confronted with. But there is no obligatory way of reading. PETER DOWNSBROUGH

Born in New Jersey in 1940, Peter Downsbrough has, since the late 1960s been among the leading artists whose work oscillates between Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and visual poetry. His work consists of lines, letters, cuts, and the spaces in between, which relate to architectural space and call into question the linearity of both space and language.

Publisher Coracle is a small publishing press directed by writer and artist Erica Van Horn and poet, artist and editor Simon Cutts, from what was a small farm between the hills of South Tipperary, Ireland since 1996. Mostly based in London from the nineteen seventies, as both a publisher, gallery, and a space for books.
